Day 3 - May 31, 2010

We woke up at our campsite to the sounds of fellow campers packing up and milling around. Deb and I agreed that we should visit at least one of the attractions before heading onto Utah. Spruce tree house seemed to fit the bill. The big seller was it was only a half mile hike down a paved trail and took about an hour.

We headed down to check out the dwellings and then headed back up to take some pics. Nearing the top we ventured off the Spruce Tree trail and followed some footprints to some great photo ops. Deb climbed down some stone stairs and along a cliff edge so I could take her photo. I warned her to be careful as she danced around the ledge of the cliff without a care in the world.

Now, it was my turn. I walked along the rim on the other side and was going to kneel for a pic when all of the sudden I hear a voice yell "Hey get back on the main path!" I looked around and see a park ranger at the bottom of the valley about 1/2 a mile down pointing at me! First of all, why are you looking up at me when you are suppose to be looking straight ahead making sure the little rug rats are not climbing on the walls of the dwelling. Second, there is no marked main path, and third of all, Captain Observant, where were you when the short Asian girl in the gray shirt was a hundred yards off the path, scaling the stairs and reenacting a scene from Stallone's Cliffhanger. It's obviously a conspiracy against the white man as this is not the first run in I've had with park rangers.

We grabbed the trailer and decided to hit the showers, make a sandwich and decide where we were headed before we hit the road. As we were checking the web an older man walked in carrying the largest bulkiest laptop I've ever seen, possibly a first gen. He needed a little help getting online and was quick to point out that it was a borrowed computer from the neighbor boy. He assured us that the "Big Bobberz" sticker was not his and kept saying how embarrassed he was. Once we got him connected we hit the road and headed toward Utah.

We ended up on the 95 Scenic Byway which was 165 miles long of nothing but beautiful scenery. As we came through a pass, we had to stop for this pic.

Regretfully I had left the window down as I got out of the truck with my camera to come back to a truck full of flying biting insects. We came through Capital Reef National Park which was beautiful.

We ate at a very expensive hole in the wall. Even eating the kids portion of ribs and salmon and sharing a bowl of sherbet it set up back 30 bones.

We had excellent internet service there & since it was getting late we inquired about a room there but of course they were booked up. We continued down the road unsure of our destination and finally decided to hit Richfield, UT and treat ourselves to a hot shower @ the Days Inn. After I negotioned the price down thirty bucks, I asked the receptionist if we could leave the truck and trailer there after checkout while we rocked the bikes through Bryce Canyon towards Escalante. They told me no problem, I picked up the key and headed to the truck and that's when Deb asked me about Wi-Fi. So I went back in & she told me no dice on the Wi-Fi but she did have an Ethernet cable. Neither Deb nor I are computer whizzes & had no idea what this was. I could only imagine Ethernet is to Wi-Fi as a laser disk is to DVD. After a quick shower and updated the blog, it was lights out.

  1. "the short Asian girl in the gray shirt" is stealthy like a ninja. You're not. Plus she's cute. You're not. LOL!
